Family History / Genealogy Tours
We have succesfully carried out many genealogy research and escorted tours in Galloway and south Scotland over the years, mainly for customers from USA, Canada and Australia. We find it interesting!
Our base in Castle Douglas in Dumfries and Galloway region is an ideal central location from which to conduct tours. Prior to arranging genealogy research holidays in Galloway, we were also involved in investigative work and therefore naturally suited to making family history enquires. We also have an excellent research assistant who specialises in the region and in 2016 participated in some of our tour visits. The picture shows Sorbie Tower, the clan Hannay seat - where we once took clients from Hawaii!
How We Can Help
Arrange accommodation - either at our own Summerhill B&B in Castle Douglas or at other accommodation in the region.
Provide transport - using our 7 seat Mervcedes minibus, we can provide an escorted tour of significant places you have identified.
Conduct additional research - to that which you may already have done.
Provide other holiday info - we'll provide info on where the best scenery and atractions are
Do your own tour - We can also design a tour route with maps etc incorporating above to do your own tour.
We are accredited with the Visit Scotland Ancestral Welcome Scheme and undertake to follow their Code of Conduct. Our main sources of information are the Dumfries and Galloway Family History Society, the Archive Centre at the Ewart Library in Dumfries and the Stewartry Musuem. Many of our customers have already conducted their own research and wish to be taken around the significant places they have identified. To supplelmet this, we have an excellent research assistant who is available to assist with searches prior to clients arrival which helps to maximise time during the tour.
This is a photo taken of a 'surprise' ruined family seat we discovered for a Canadian family.
The coat of arms shown in this picture was taken from the ruined building in the previous photograph and is now preserved by the current Bell-Irving family at their nearby premises.
During a tour we discovered the unkown family seat near Lockerbie for members of the Bell-Irving and Johnston family, now resident in Vancouver, Canada. We then traced their current relatives who were very welcoming and showed us the coat of arms.
You provided great value for money and we would be happy to highly recommend your services to others.

Our most recent review - September 2016
Hi Tina and Robin, I am writing to personally thank you both for your hospitality when we stayed with you at Summerhill B&B in September 2016. The 2 nights was not enough, wish I could have stayed a week, I mean Tina's cooking alone was so amazing, and our days busy with the tour of properties my ancestors lived on in the 1180 - 1860 era. This was great, and with your local knowledge we visited the 7 properties easily over the 2 days. It was further enriched by the researcher you suggested, Davie Hunter, who found many of my lost people all around the local churchyards. It was a very interesting, enjoyable and immensely satisfying tour over the two days, and capped off with the scenery and local history you and Davie added in as we toured around. Continued below.

I cannot imagine how our time with you could have been improved, I left with much more understanding of my ancestors, and a great sense of understanding they were very blessed with good fortune in their new homeland . I am so happy with my stay with you at Galloway Holidays. My only regret is I did not allow enough time. I thank you very much for all the trouble you went to, including the local kippers.
With kind regards to you both,
Cathy & Dave Dixon
