We have 6 fascinating driving routes based from Castle Douglas, which can be mixed and matched to provide a self-drive car touring holiday of mid Galloway from 2 days or longer to suit your schedule. Five of the drives cover between 50 to 60 miles distance with two longer drives of around 70 miles.
Each drive has several places of interest along the way. At your welcome meeting we advise on the characteristics of each route including tea rooms, pubs and restaurants. We can also advise on other places which may match your interests, including gardens and nurseries, short walks, visitor centres and detour options.

This driving tour allowing you to discover the scenic delights of Galloway has up to four different overnight stay stops – 2 nights at each location.
You begin in Castle Douglas ‘food town’ followed by a day looking around the small towns and villages of the Solway Coast. Contrast this with a visit the upland Glenkens at the head of Loch Ken before taking the popular Queens Way drive via Newton Stewart to Wigtown, Scotland’s book town.
Visit Bladnoch whisky distillery, the historic town of Whithorn and fishing port of Isle of Whithorn at the tip of the Machars peninsula for another interesting day.
Continuing west, you visit Stranraer, the largest town with the option of lunch in a fine lighthouse restaurant with views of ferries sailing past to Belfast.
From Portpatrick, the shortest crossing point to Ireland, you visit Scotland’s most southerly point at the Mull of Galloway with Logan Botanical Gardens worth a visit during the drive.
For something different, and a break from the car, we can make arrangements for you to take a day trip by ferry to Belfast – with the option of a bus trip to the Giant’s Causeway or other visitor attractions.
For the full 7 day 8 nights tour you visit the mountain scenery of Glentrool and finish a 2 night stay in attractive Gatehouse of Fleet set in a National Scenic Area from where you can visit Kirkcudbright artists’ town and other Stewartry scenic area.
